Part I of an Intimate Conversation with the Lady of Empowerment

Meet Fern Olivia Langham, the amazing yoga and meditation instructor, intuitive healer, and entrepreneur behind Thyroid.Yoga™, Amplify Effect, and Dreams on Purpose. Her name’s a-buzz on the street, and recently I had the pleasure of meeting this wise woman and healer. I am excited to share her inspirational story with you. Here she tells us how she showed up, faced her challenges and embraced an authentic life … and how she shows up to support others on their personal journeys of becoming majestic, radiant and brilliant.

Q: Tell us about your yoga background and how you found yourself where you are now – a very successful yoga teacher and entrepreneur?

A: My dad was a kundalini and hatha yoga teacher back in the ’70s, and he introduced dharma into every conversation. He had crystals all around the house. My mom always chanted mantras, and they had a dog named Govindah. I didn’t realize it at the time, but I was primed to live the life of a yogi.

However, yoga didn’t find me until I was very sick with an autoimmune thyroid condition called Hashimoto’s Hypothyroidism and could barely get out of bed because I felt like I had two bricks under my feet, along with vertigo, brain fog, all-over puffiness and a belly that looked pregnant but clearly wasn’t. To numb the pain along with my boredom from working 10+ hours in a corporate job in finance that didn’t feed my soul, I took bootcamp and spinning classes every day, but this exhausted my already burnt-out adrenals and made my thyroid symptoms even worse.

Then one day, I had enough of living like a zombie! As if by divine guidance, on one particular awful day at the office, I snuck out on my lunch break and found my way into a yoga studio where I took my very first class. I fell in love with the way that I felt nurtured and loved – a feeling that was clearly missing in my life – and I returned the next day … and the following day.

It was a natural decision to pursue my teacher training at that studio with my first teacher, Donnalynn Civello. I completed my 200-hour certification and began teaching immediately, and soon after, launched my yoga and wellness company and began leading retreats internationally. I studied Integrative Nutrition and became a board-certified holistic health practitioner and continued my studies of prenatal yoga, restorative yoga, ayurveda and energy work so I could really offer my clients something very unique and powerful.

And then I left my corporate job so I could live my passion with my whole heart. That same month, I left a six-year relationship that wasn’t aligned with my purpose as a light-worker, and a year later, I moved from New York City to LA to expand my practice.

I’ve been teaching yoga for over five years, studying in many different lineages: Vinyasa with Donnalynn Civello and my teachers at Jivamukti Yoga, Katonah Yoga with my mentors Elena Brower, Nevine Michaan, Abbie Galvin, and most recently, Kundalini Yoga with Guru Jagat, the founder of Ra Ma Institute in Venice, California..

I believe that all styles of yoga have something important to offer us, and so I have cross-pollinated ancient yogic wisdom to create something refreshingly new, yet refined with rich substance and deep history. This is precisely why I created Thyroid.Yoga™, a method designed to empower men and women to say goodbye to survival mode and embody radiant health again. It is the game-changer!

What makes my work unique is that I bring together the strongest possible offering for the physical, emotional and cultural health of my students and community.

Q: Wow! So you left your corporate job, a relationship, and moved cross-country on your own! That sounds scary … how did you do it?

A: Yoga, meditation, mantra, self-care and introspection empowered me to find my voice and my strength, to find confidence and grace, to fully step into my power as a lightworker and a healer. In the process, at the cusp of my Saturn Return, I left my career working in corporate finance because I felt inauthentic doing work that was not in alignment with my calling.

Even though it was a six-figure income and a comfortable, “safe” job, I didn’t care. It wasn’t aligned with my values, and it felt worse to stay stuck than to step into the unknown. I had a spiritual awakening, and I just couldn’t do anything that wasn’t aligned with my true purpose. Working the corporate job was clearly toxic - it was making me sick.

During that same month, I left a six-year relationship with someone I deeply loved, but couldn't evolve with, as I was unable to express myself or feel understood in my spiritual path. It all seemed a little scary, but I had mentors, teachers and friends who had my back, so I knew I’d be fine. Having their support was everything.

Q: I love those moments, when you find a teacher who really is there for you.

A: That’s exactly it. And that’s why I love being there for my students. As yoga teachers, we have the power to light the way and see our students’ gifts and not let them settle for anything less than their most authentic, strongest self.

Elena Brower has been one of my angels and dearest friends.

I came back from teaching a yoga retreat in Puerto Rico and found myself crying on my yoga mat during savasana. … We all know that’s what yoga mats were created for, anyway! After class, Elena pulled me aside and said:

“Seriously, no more bullsh*t.”

This was the sentence that changed EVERYTHING.

“Break up with him. If you could only see you like everyone else sees you. You have light to give this world, and I’m not going to let you hide who you truly are any longer.”

I was blown away by this statement and by her commitment to my truth.

I had never told her any of the hurt I had been feeling, yet somehow she knew – and she knew whatever was happening was not OK. One of the world’s greatest yoga teachers, one who I had looked up to for so long, was believing in ME. Her simple sentence changed the path of my career, my purpose, and my life.

I cried a river.

But then I got my sh*t together, and the next day I began mapping out my future, and began to fearlessly express myself in my work.

Over the past few years, I’ve had the gift of guiding hundreds of men and women in my classes, events, and workshops.

Most recently, I've naturally teamed up with lifestyle coach Tina Paymaster and created a training course for those desiring beauty, love and wealth in their lives. This training became a one-of-a-kind program that helps entrepreneurs, coaches, healers and anyone on a path of personal growth rapidly elevate their spiritual awareness while empowering them to trust themselves as they become stronger leaders in the world.

I combine my wisdom of yoga, meditation, breathwork, ayurveda, and radical self-care to guide each student in a practical daily ritual and provide accountability and a supportive community.

You can learn all about that program, Dreams on Purpose, here.

Q: What has been your biggest challenge in getting where you are today?

A: A deep ingrained scarcity mindset that I had been holding since childhood. My parents were hoarders. They had tons of stuff, a pantry full of canned food for years, and knick-knacks all over the house. … They had this fear that they would never have enough or would somehow lose it all. So I, too collected tons of stuff, always had a full closet and moving apartments each semester at college was a nightmare.

This scarcity mindset repeated itself in many facets of my life. It kept me stuck in a job that was depleting me, a relationship where I wasn't being true to myself, and weight gain that wouldn't seem to budge no matter how healthy I ate or how active I was.

Once I identified all my worst fears of being worthy enough of love and success, or of having it all and losing it, I was able to stop living in scarcity. I lost weight, my body felt lighter, and my mind clearer. And it's a journey that I have to be conscious of every single day, and it's not easy.

We live on a polarity planet and society is always telling us that we aren't {skinny, smart, or strong} enough, we need to buy this thing or that thing to be more beautiful or to be more worthy, but the truth is, we are enough. We don't have to believe in the fear that society is broadcasting. We need to show up and be majestic, radiant, brilliant.

I’ve been truly able to grow my career as a yoga teacher, healer and life coach leaps and bounds, because I have been able to let go of that scarcity mindset and live in my values of grace, abundance and gratitude.
