Little Box of Rocks Founder, Kiera Fogg, Talks Self-Care and the Best Healing Crystals for Moms
Being a busy entrepreneur and a mother of three boys, people often ask me how I do it. How do I maintain balance? How do I juggle a rapidly growing start-up company while also attending to the needs of my three (incredibly active) young sons? And on top of that, how do I find time to take care of myself?
The honest answer? There is no real balance. Every day the scale tips to one side or another, and I never quite feel like I’m able to hit that elusive middle point that we all seem to yearn for. So I don’t strive so much for balance anymore.
What I do strive for is connection: connection with my children, connection with my friends and family, and most importantly, a connection with my own spirit. Connection, I’ve found, is more meaningful than balance – and bonus, it’s actually attainable.
In fact, connection is so important to me that I’ve built my entire business around it. My company, Little Box of Rocks, is very much like a flower shop, but with healing crystals. Every day, our customers form meaningful connections with their loved ones and with themselves, through the power of healing crystals. It’s this unique concept that I believe was born out of a pivotal turning point in my own motherhood journey, where I decided I needed to prioritize my own spiritual well-being.
My Personal Self-Care Breakthrough
I was standing in line at the grocery store and my heart suddenly started to race. My eyes darted around frantically to see if anyone had noticed the fact that my whole body was shaking. I was shifting back and forth, feeling a layer of sweat form underneath my heavy winter parka.
I took it off and lopped it into my cart, continuing to mentally urge the long lineup to advance in front of me. The blood was draining from my face now and I thought I would surely faint.
I couldn’t take it anymore. I shoved my cart to the side and darted to the bathroom where I locked myself in a stall and watched terrified as my whole body shook uncontrollably.
This was the day I had my first panic attack – the day I realized that something needed to change and that I was the one who needed to change it.
I had been a stay at home mom for about five years. I had three boys under the ages of three and I was exhausted. Not only that, but somehow I was also bored, a bizarre combination that I believe only a mother can fully comprehend.
As recommended by a doctor, I made several changes to my lifestyle that allowed me to take better care of myself. Things like getting enough sleep, exercising, meditating and remembering to eat in the morning all helped me to regain a piece of my identity that had been missing for a long time.
I also added one more habit that I can now see has had a profound impact on my career: I started collecting crystals again.
I had been obsessed with them as a kid, plucking dozens of beautiful clusters out of the wilderness and feeling a profound sense of magic in doing so. But over the years, with the busyness of life, I had somehow forgotten about them. Suddenly, this same sense of magic had been reawakened in me. I began adding to my collection again by visiting the local crystal shops near me. I’d buy crystals and carry them with me everywhere I went.
And naturally, out of this vast collection I was forming, I found myself with some favorites. (Favorites that I’d turn into healing crystal bouquets that would eventually land on the pages of magazines like Vogue, People, and O, The Oprah Magazine.)
So here, specifically, are my top favorite crystals for moms. These are some of the crystals that helped me when I was having post-partum anxiety and I believe they can help any mom who wants to reconnect with her own spirit.
The Best Healing Crystals for Moms
One of the first things that I learned when I started to build my soon to be enormous crystal collection was that crystals actually need to be cleansed from time to time, in order to get rid of any lower energies that they might have picked up. I thought, “Oh great – yet another thing that I need to find time to CLEAN!” But what you’ll love about Kyanite, aside from it’s pretty, powdery blue color, is that it doesn’t hold onto negative energy, and therefore is one of the few crystals that doesn’t need to be cleansed. And what’s more is that this blade-shaped beauty is also believed to instantly align our body’s chakras, so it’s the perfect efficient little gem for the busy mom!
Often referred to as “the stone of motherhood,” Moonstone is an incredibly powerful crystal for relieving stress, heightening the intuition and soothing the emotions. An amazing stone for pregnancy and childbirth, it is also believed to balance female hormones. (Because of this, my husband likes to joke that we need to get our hands on wayyyy more of these…) I like to meditate with this cream colored gem any time I feel off kilter in any way.
3. Himalayan Salt Rock
My all-time favorite way to relax after a long day is to take a hot bath infused with Himalayan Salt Rock. This is the same stone that’s used to make the Himalayan Salt Lamps that simulate the electromagnetic charge of a rainstorm. When used as salt it has so many amazing benefits. It’s filled with minerals that our bodies need and can help to ease sore, tense muscles. It’s a great, natural de-stresser and always leaves my skin feeling amazing.
4. Desert Rose
This is one of my favorite crystals, not only because of its unique shape, but also because of how it’s formed. The Desert Rose gets its distinct flower-like shape from having been slowly etched over time by millions of grains of the desert sand. I love the idea that the roughness of the sand can carve out such an intricate beauty – what a great metaphor for motherhood! On that note, do you have a case of mommy brain? Get your hands on this unique beauty, as it’s believed to quiet worries and promote mental clarity.
It’s definitely no secret that our little bundles of joy can sometimes (okay most of the time) leave us feeling pretty drained. We’re constantly giving so much of ourselves, which is why Citrine is so great for busy moms. A powerful rejuvenator, this golden beauty is infused with positive energy and believed to provide an energetic pick-me-up physically, mentally and emotionally.
6. Rose Quartz
Widely known as the stone of unconditional love, the pink Rose Quartz is said to attract and inspire love in all forms. It’s especially good for promoting self-love and emotional harmony. As a busy mom, I know first hand how hard it can be to simply remember to care for myself. This is why I like to keep a nice big piece of Rose Quartz out where I can see it (mine is on my nightstand), as a visual reminder to take a little bit of “me time” every day – even if it’s just two quiet minutes spent alone, breathing deeply and not staring at a device.
Feeling overwhelmed? Skip the wine and find yourself a smooth piece of Sodalite. This rich, royal blue stone is said to help calm the mind and ease panic attacks. This is one of the best crystals for anxiety and stress so tuck it in your pocket or purse and hold it any time you need to summon a little bit of serenity.
8. Clear Quartz
The Clear Quartz is simply a must-have for anyone who owns a crystal collection. This is an incredibly useful stone that’s believed to amplify the energy of the crystals around them. It’s also believed to take on the energy of our thoughts, so you can program this stone with your own desire or intention.
