On My Mat with Simon Park: a Q+A with “the Flying Nomad”
Simon Park is dedicated to the teachings of his first teacher Shiva Rea and focuses his practice on intelligent, fluid movement. He leads workshops and teacher trainings in Vinyasa (flow) yoga and Thai massage worldwide, drawing inspiration from many styles (Vinyasa, Iyengar, Ashtanga, Thai massage, and martial arts) and teachers (Shiva Rea, Maty Ezraty, Joan White, Duncan Wong, and Dharma Mittra). Known as “The Flying Nomad”, Simon Park also draws his inspiration from road legends such as Jimi Hendrix, who said, "the Earth is my home." He was chosen by Yoga Journal as “one of the most influential and gifted, next generation of yoga teachers.”
Why yoga? It is guaranteed to chill you and make you feel like the best version of yourself — for yourself and others.
Go-to outfit: Lately I’ve been into baggy sweats, t-shirts and a hoody. But it’s wintertime now. Summer gear is a sleeveless t-shirt and shorts. I go organic, as it makes a difference in comfort.
I love teachers and classes that: Cut to the chase and give the deep experience of the practice. I prefer to ditch the fluff and self-promo vibe.
My mission as a teacher: Keep it real and make the practice accessible for everyone I teach.
Greatest challenge: I’ve been delaying this one which is having kids and a family. I’m guessing it’s life’s ultimate challenge.
Tunes that help me find my flow: I have extremely eclectic music taste. I love so many different styles of music, and I feel like I’ve made so many different styles of music work with the yoga practice in the past. But currently, it is quite chill.
Yoga has taught me: An inner sense of right and wrong.
Alignment tip that changed my practice: Slow down.
Post-class fuel: Beer! Just kidding. It really depends: I like green juices, but sometimes a good hearty meal. I eat mostly veg, but have an open palate.
Inspiration: Hendrix, Keith Richards, Bon Jovi, Shiva Rea, Richard Freeman, Dharma Mittra, and Jack Kerouac.
Current mantra: Grow ’til you die.
