Defining Yoga Styles: Kundalini Yoga
Kundalini yoga focuses on harnessing the body’s energy to enhance personal awareness and enlightenment. The word “Kundalini” is a term for the powerful energy that is located at the base of the spine or the Root Chakra. Through an organized pattern of Kriyas (quick movements), meditation, and pranayama (yogic breathing) Kundalini yoga unlocks the energy in the body’s lower chakras and directs it to the higher chakras in the brain where it activates the pituitary and pineal glands.
Kundalini yoga is designed to awaken the glandular systems, strengthen the nervous system, and bring balance to the mind, body and soul. Practice often begins with simple breathing technique of alternating nostril breathing while repeating the mantra (phrase) “Sat Nam.” This helps awaken the Kundalini energy and opens the channels that connects the chakras (energy points) along the spine. An stimulating and illuminating form of yoga, Kundalini is appropriate for all levels and will benefit mental clarity, lung capacity and higher consciousness.
